Keeping a clear head when life gets crazy.

Does anyone else feel like they are just as busy as they were this time last month...?  You know, during the mad rush of the holidays...?  I don't know how this is possible, yet it seems to be the case.  What was Christmas shopping and wrapping and baking and parties is now grocery shopping and cleaning and cooking and carpooling.  It's easy to feel a wee bit frazzled.  When Mucinex asked me to share a few tips about how I stay clear headed and focused when I should be a totally hectic mess, I thought it about what my typical day entails...

And I felt sorry for me.

6:30 - 6:44 am.  Hit snooze button on alarm. Repeat twice.
6:45 - 7:55 am.  Get dressed, (wonder why I'm the only person who notices the meowing, pushy cat demanding his breakfast), feed cat, dog, make coffee, make sure kids are up, drink coffee, wonder if Al Roker is getting goofier or if I just hadn't noticed it before.  Eat a spoonful of peanut butter, get Grant out the door, pick up kids for carpool, drop then off at school and drive to boot camp exercise class.
8:00 - 9:00 am.  Gah.

9:00 - 9:30 am.  Stop by the grocery store, or the dry cleaners, or the car wash, or gas station, or whatever else needs to be taken care of.
9:30 am - 2:30 pm.  Feed cat, shower, eat breakfast, answer emails, write blog posts, create things, eat lunch, make photo tutorials, start the dishwasher, feed cat, clean house, do paper work, take a deep breath, figure out what's for dinner, start cooking, feed cat, eat lunch, fold laundry, clean up cat barf since he's a pig and over-eats, answer emails, feed cat.

2:30 - 7:00 pm.  Welcome Grant home from school, fix snacks, supervise homework, feed cat, run kids to appointments and activities, supervise more homework, clean barfy carpet area with steam cleaner, sign permission slips, organize kid paperwork, feed cat, cook dinner, finish laundry, pour a glass of wine.
7:00 pm - 7:30 pm.  Dinner.
7:30 pm - 11:00 pm. Mom takes the rest of the night off... (except for finishing blog posts, answering emails, finishing laundry, feeding the cat and solving last minute kid crises.)

So back to the question:  What keeps me clear headed? 3 things.

1. I double puffy heart love my Google calendar.
I love that I can color-code my kids and see where everyone should be at any given moment ('cuz it's on my phone too!)

2. I eat a lot.

Well, by a lot, I mean often.
If I don't eat, I get what we call, hangry.  Hangry isn't pretty.  Hangry is grumpy and hangry makes bad decisions and forgets important things (like turning off stove burners or feeding the cat.)  Hangry makes everyone's life miserable.  I do my best NOT to get hangry.

3. I try to get enough sleep.

Tired is almost as bad as hangry.  You can't keep a clear head if you are operating under a sleep deficit.  It's simple science.  Getting enough sleep is a tricky thing too if you're sick or if you have sinus problems.  Trying to sleep while in pain, or not being able to breathe is kind of a problem, yes?

Being stuffed up and groggy doesn't exactly help you stay clear-headed during these busy days.  Mucinex Sinus-Max TM is a line of over the counter products that have an ingredient (guaifenesin) that breaks up The Yuck that can cause congestion.  It helps to relieve symptoms like sinus pressure and headaches.  (I want The Yuck to be gone... I want the pain to be gone... the Sinus-Max line of products does that.)

You're too busy with family, home, and work to let unbearable symptoms slow you down. You need a brand you can trust to get the job done. Mucinex is the #1 doctor-recommended, #1 pharmacist-recommended, and #1 most popular OTC expectorant brand. Mucinex products all have the dependable, mucus-busting power to get The Yuck out of your system, so you can keep up with life.

I've noticed that life doesn't slow down for me when I'm feeling sick.  How about you?

Balancing a hectic schedule is hard enough. Trying to keep it together when you're under the weather requires additional help. Maximum Strength* Mucinex® Sinus-Max™ Pressure & Pain triple action formula fights mucus, congestion, sinus pressure and headache/pain.  With cold and flu season in full force, I am relieved to know that even my worst symptoms can’t derail my plans.

A quick trip to Disneyland... Yep, I Just Got Happier.

A few weeks ago I attended the Craft & Hobby Association's winter trade show and conference, which was held at the Anaheim Convention Center... Which happens to be a stone's throw from Disneyland.
And what's a girl to do when she is hanging out with her blogging friends while just a stone's throw from Disneyland?  Um, go over and play, of course!

With the exception of Bev, from Flamingo Toes, who is a local girl like me, all of our buddies were from out of town. We had Arizona, Nevada, and Tennessee with us, and we Cali girls felt bad because the weather was crazy cold for Southern California.  Low temperatures or not, we had such a good time!

It has been several years since I've been to Disneyland, so I definitely haven't seen Cars Land yet.  It just opened up a few months ago, and can I just tell you that it is amazing!?  Please forgive the photo quality, I was not about to lug my big girl camera around and just snapped pictures with my phone.  It was like stepping into the movie.  (You have seen the movies, right?  Even if you don't have kids, you should see the movies.)

The attention to detail is amazing.  I loved that the actual Cars were rolling around as characters.  I am very curious to know exactly how that works, because it looks like they are actually talking and interacting with the guests.

Flo was one of my favorite characters in the movie.  (She be sassy!) I loved her "restaurant"
L-R Katie from Sweet Rose Studio; Bev from Flamingo Toes; me; Angie from The Country Chic Cottage;
Allison from All For The Boys; Sara from Mom Endeavors. Bottom - Carolina from Always Expect Moore
And because we had been at the convention all day, we were kind of hungry.  We ate at the Cozy Cone Motel, which is so cute! (Everything is served in a cone, by the way, and I ordered Chicken Verde.  I can't tell you how good, warm and spicy it was!  Totally hit the spot on a cold night!

Seriously, check out the attention to detail.  Everything, even the planters are cute little cones.  Adorable and charming.

While at California Adventure, we went on Soarin' Over California, which if you haven't gone on that, it's possibly my favorite ride at that park.  Totally reminds me to appreciate what an amazing place California is!  (I forget sometimes...)

We headed over to Disneyland (after stopping to get Churros).  Seriously, there just isn't anything better than to walk down Main Street, USA and see Sleeping Beauty's Castle off in the distance while you excitedly decide where you're going to go first.  (We opted for the Matterhorn.)

We had such a great time!
I actually felt a little guilty having so much fun.  Want to know why...?
Because it dawned on me that we haven't yet taken Grant to Disneyland.  The kid is turning 9 next month and he practically lives in the shadow of the Matterhorn and we haven't ever taken him to Disneyland.  What is wrong with us?  We'll have to rectify that situation pretty soon.  (Geez!  What kind of a mother am I!?)

In the meantime, if any of you have been thinking about a trip to Disneyland or California Adventure (or both!) there are several deals, packages and discounts going on right now  For example, there is a special 3 day ticket offer that is on sale through Feb. 26 where you can save up to $30 per ticket and get a park-hopper pass. The tickets must be used by March 11, but what a great time to visit the parks!  If you want to plan a trip to Disneyland, there are great tips that you can check out online to help you get great deals and see the most of what the parks have to offer.  For some great planning tips, click HERE, or check out www.disneyparksblog.com and www.limitedtimemagic.com for more info and ideas.

I'm off to check them out myself.  (I need to do right by my son...)

A simple Valentine's Day mantel.

I wanted to show you what I came up with for a little Valentine's Day display for my nemesis, the mantel.
(I was going to post this yesterday, but I went with some healthy habits instead...)

I don't have anything against Valentine's Day in particular, but I don't really count it among my favorite of holidays, so it's always a bit tricky for me to pull something together.  I end up with a pretty eclectic mix...
Mercury glass, chunky wooden frames, shutters and sparkle.
That kind of hurts my brain to think about that mix, but it doesn't hurt my eyes, so I'm sticking to it for a few weeks.

The little all you need is... art piece was made out of scraps and left-overs in my craft supply stash.  Was super easy to do and it's totally temporary.

Remember the Halloween party invitations that I made a few months ago?  I had lots of scraps of this cool black and white paper left over.  On a piece of foam board that was cut to the size of the frame, I used a glue stick and painter's tape to layer the scraps until the board was covered. (Sort of like shingles on a roof, I just worked my way up...)

I am so lazy that I didn't even bother to cut off the ends of the paper.  Once the board was covered, I cut out letters on my Cricut (And yes, you could buy pre-cut ones at the craft store of your choice.)  I eye-balled the letters into what looked like a balanced position then adhered them with a glue stick.  Easy.

It looked pretty good during the day, but in the evening there wasn't enough contrast, so HH got a Sharpie and carefully outlined them to add more contrast.

Do you decorate for Valentine's Day, or are you still cleaning up pine needles?
Or both?

5 little changes for a healthier lifestyle. (And they're actually do-able.)

Did I tell you that I am not making New Year's Resolutions anymore?  Do you know anyone who managed to stick to one for the full year?  Me neither.  More and more, I'm convinced that change is actually the result of a lot of little efforts.  Why don't we call them New Year's Efforts instead?

I think I'm already living a pretty healthy lifestyle,  but I think I can do better, so I'm taking 5 little steps in that direction.

1.  I need more sleep.
I definitely don't get enough.
source
I stay up too late, and for no good reason.  I am tired at 8:00 or so (which is too early to go to bed in this household) but then I get a second wind about 9:30 and if HH doesn't tell me it's time to go to bed, I will stay up until midnight or later, doing nothing or watching TV.  (Usually a movie I have already seen.  Why do I do that?!)
I'm going to try to set a regular bedtime for myself and try to stick to it.

2.  Getting enough exercise.
I've been pretty good about this so far in 2013.  The key for me was to recognize what doesn't work for me and be honest with myself about it.
I won't stick to a work out at home.  If I'm already at home, but need to go out to exercise, I will do things around the house until the last minute possible and then tell myself I would be late anyway and then not go.  (Keepin' it real here peeps.)

I need a routine, I need accountability and I need fun.  I found a workout that is Monday through Friday, less than 10 minutes from Grant's school.  I take Grant to school every day, so it's easy to drop him off and keep driving.  (Tuck and roll, kid!) There are people I know at the work out, so if I don't show up, it's noticeable.  (No more anonymously flying under the radar.)  It's a fun boot camp with constantly changing work outs, so it's fun, but most important?  I'm seeing results.  Nothing is as motivating as fitting into a smaller pair of pants!

3. Drink more water.
I'm pretty good about this, but I know I could do better.

I have 2 cups of coffee in the morning and then I stick to water.  (Until it's time for a glass of wine or two.)  I don't drink soda.  (I don't like it, which helps a lot.)  I currently drink 70 to 80 ounces a day, but I'd like to get that up to 100 ounces.

4.  I'm going to try not to be such a stress monkey.
Stress can have a physical effect on your health.

I am going to do my best to stop fretting over the small things, or worrying about things that are beyond my control.  There's a line between being prepared for trouble and trying to borrow it.  I am going to do my best to let go of a few things and be in the moment more.  I think I'll live to see more moments that way.

5.  Eat more greens.
Veggies?  Me no likey.  But I'm trying.
I have been getting lots much better about eating my spinach since I started drinking these Green Smoothies.  My skin is looking better than ever and I am feeling good.

I'm trying to make better choices when it comes to little snacks and treats too, so I am loving these Quaker Popped Rice Snacks!
Quaker® Quakes® are now Quaker® PoppedTM – a new name for the snack made with the delicious goodness of whole grain brown rice and corn and a great snacking solution.
They are popped, not fried and there are 14 different flavors to choose from.  The Vanilla Creme Brulee...?  Um, I may or may not have eaten the entire bag in one sitting.  SO good.    I also tried and love the Quaker Popped Chips.  They are made with hummus!  Yummus!  (I shared the Popped rice snacks with the boys, but I hogged the Popped Chips all to myself...)

Are you trying to live a healthier lifestyle?  What are you doing?  I'd love to hear about it.  Reply below for your chance to win a sample of all 14 flavors of Quaker Popped Rice Snacks and $1,000 gift card to help you achieve your New Year’s resolutions.

Texture, color and inspiration at the CHA winter show.

Remember last week when I told you about the Top 5 craft products that I (personally) was all excited about after the CHA (Craft & Hobby Association's) Winter Trade Show?  Well, I had also been feeling a smidge  a wee bit  kind of   fairly uninspired as of late.  (Yesterday I shared the AWFUL areas I need to work on at home.) I had high hopes of soaking up a little inspiration at the show.

We all get into ruts.  I think even super-duper-crafty-Olympic-sized creative types get into little funks.
If they say they don't, they're lying.

I was excited to see the products that are coming on the market, but I was also so happy to see all sorts of colors, textures and people.  I thought I'd share some of the images from the show.

I was thrilled that my Personalized Wine Charms made Plaid's Blogger Project Wall.  I was in awe of the company I was in.  Katie from Sweet Rose Studio, Beckie from Infarrantly Creative and Heather from Dollar Store Crafts.
CHA isn't open to the public, so I was very fortunate that Plaid Crafts invited me along and asked me to demonstrate how I make my Faux Robin Eggs for a video tutorial.

Plaid was awesome to work with and I'm excited about several of the new products!

There were also some amazingly artistic people there.  I was thrilled to spend a little time with them.  They are creative inspirations and just flat out really nice people.
You might recognize a lot of faces: Melissa from Number 2 Pencil; Katie from Sweet Rose Studio; Sara from Mom Endeavors; Amy from Positively Splendid; Jen from Tatertots & Jello; Amy from Living Locurto; Karen from The Graphics Fairy; Tauni from The SNAP Conference; Mique from Thirty Handmade Days and The Queen Bee Market; Heather from Dollar Store Crafts; Angie from Country Chic Cottage; and Bev from Flamingo Toes.  (I love hanging out with Bev.  One of the nicest people ever!)  I also was so pleased to meet Jade from JaderBomb; Carolyn from Homework, and Vicki from The Creative Goddess.  Whenever I get to see Alexa from I Love To Create and The Swell Life, it is a fun time.  She be crazy.
Being around people who are creative help to push you to be more creative as well.  I don't believe that anything happens in a vacuum, so it is vital to bounce ideas off of each other, to let others inspire you and for you to inspire others.  (Actually, that philosophy can apply everywhere... not just when it comes to making stuff.)

The displays and booths provided lots of inspiration, whether it was the products themselves or the displays created to showcase them, I snapped lots of photos.  Here are some shots of what struck my fancy.

Texture and color and paper and fun products!  I'm really gravitating toward texture right now.
I was particularly inspired by the displays and products in the Canvas Corp booth.

I noticed a lot of yardsticks and tape measures used in displays throughout the show.  Not normally my style, so I'm not sure why they are calling my name...  That's where the creativity comes in.
Questions for myself: What do I like about those yardsticks? The look?  The unexpected way it's being used?  The color?  The rusticity?
Then, (important) how can I use it in a project that works for me and my style?  That answer probably won't come overnight.  It will float around in my head and pop up unexpectedly for some other application.

There is nothing wrong with seeing something you like and making one of your own. (Always give credit where credit is due, of course!) The very process of making something will spark your creativity a little bit more.  Feel free to let the things that inspire you just sit in your head for a while.  Let them marinate.  Let it happen naturally and put your own twist on things.

If they could bottle creativity, then we might not appreciate those creative moments when the come around.
Be sure to appreciate your creativity.  What inspires you today?

Keepin' It Real: The ugly scoop on 3 problem areas in my house.

Last week I shared my 5 favorite new products from the CHA winter trade show, and tomorrow I'm going to share some of the images, displays and people who inspired me while I was there... but today, I'm going to keep in real and show you the sad, dreary little spots in my house that need some serious inspiration and TLC.

That's right... I'm going to share the ugly with you.  This is not a Before & After post, this is a This-Is-Terrible-How-Can-You-Call-Yourself-A-Craft-And-Lifestyle-Blogger!? post.

Let's start with The Mantel From Hell.  You know I hate my mantel, right?
This is its current condition.

A) That dark paneled wall that HH says I can't paint.  It makes it difficult to do anything.  The whole shebang is off-center and asymmetrical as well.  Diff-E-cult to work with.

But it's late January... still no excuse for:
B) The remains of an arrangement from my blue and green Christmas.
Yeah.... pathetic.  It was festive, now it's just kind of a holiday graveyard.

Which brings me to:
C) These little cute little green trees.  Well... they were cute and green and sparkly when my sister brought them over on Christmas Eve.  They were in the kitchen, but after Christmas I moved them to the mantel, where I promptly forgot to water them or give them any care or attention whatsoever.
They are still green and sparkly, but that is only because it turns out that their Christmas magic was sprayed on them in the form of green dye and glitter.  Now they are stiff little Tree Skeletons.

D) Mercury glass.  Shoved out of the way.  Sitting in a clump.  Mad glass, sad glass, no class.

My goal is to have this mantel prettied up and ready to share on Monday.  Somebody please, please hold me accountable.  Monday, OK? (**** Um, OK...Tuesday...)

Then there are the two other wall spaces that get me all cranky when I look at them...
The dark, boring hallway...

It needs paint, it needs a gallery wall, it needs something.  So far I have only had enough energy to get irritated whenever I walk by.  This is one of the next projects that has to happen around here.  Ugh.  (When did I get so lazy...?  I love to paint.  What's wrong with me?)

The other area that Has. Bothered. Me. Since. We. Moved. In. Here. is the dining room wall.

We've been in this house 4 years, and the only thing I've done to this wall is to glower at it and talk smack about it behind its back.

A) I have creative "writer's block" when it comes to doing anything about all of this space.  I love the Family Rules subway art I made a few years ago, but I think it's time for it to go somewhere else.  It's too small for that big wall.
B) See?  More space.  (That's part of why I love Halloween.  I can just fill it up with bats.)

And because I'm Keepin' It Real today, I'm just gonna share C - F too.
C) Candle wax I need to make into new candles.  Hubs just loves it when I leave that kind of thing sitting around.  pfft. Not.
D) Misc paperwork that sits on the table and gets scooped aside into piles at dinner time.  And then left there.  Sometimes for days...
E)  Silver bowls that should have been put away right after Christmas.  Hubs loves these sitting around too.
F) Kid paper work, headphones and someone's water bottle collection.  (Does anyone else have people who leave half full (I'm an optimist) bottles of water all over the house?!  Makes me nuts!)

I know I'm not the only one with rooms like this.  Right?
I'm hopeful that what I saw at CHA will spur me into action somewhere (anywhere!) in the house.  See you tomorrow with my CHA inspiration post.
Wish me luck!

(*********UPDATED: The mantel update will be posted Tuesday, 1/29/13.  That's what I get for promising things without first checking my calendar!  Duh. *********)

How to make your own jar candles (using recycled jars and candle wax)

Want to make your own scented, layered jar candles?  Want to do it, using items you already have on hand..?  Practically for free..?
It's easy!

scented, layered, candle, wax, jar, recycled, fragrant, green, cream, wick

I have a little problem.... you know those candles you buy that smell amazing, but the wick burns down through the middle of them and you're left with a bunch of (fragrant) wax? Those candles?  Yeah.  I can't throw them out.  I know I can't burn them anymore, but they're usually expensive and the thought of throwing away all of that expensive wax makes me cranky.

I won't say that I'm a hoarder, per se, but I do have quite a little collection going, because I know I can melt that wax and make another candle out of it.  It's easy, it's practically free, and it only takes about 30 minutes.

Gather up your empty, burned down candles and a clean jar.  Boil a little water and hold the jar with the candle wax in the water until you can see that it's melting just a little.

You don't want to melt it, you just want to soften it up a bit so that you can cut it into chunks while in the jar and get it into the bowls you'll be using when you melt the wax.  If you melt the wax in the existing jar, you get all of the soot and smutchz with it too.  No thanks for that.

Put the different waxes into separate bowls and melt it in the microwave.  Treat it like chocolate chips... microwave for a minute or two, then stir, keep repeating until the wax is melted.  There will probably be a little bit of soot or debris in the melted wax, but it will sink to the bottom of the bowl.

Prepare your glass jar with a wick.  You can get these at any craft store.

Carefully and slowly pour one color of the wax into the jar.  (Any yuck or debris should stick to the bowl as you pour.)  Let the wax set up, then pour the second layer.

For the lid, you can do any number of things to it.  Paint it, Mod Podge pretty paper or fabric on it, or just cover it with a circle of fabric and pretend it's a jar of jam.

I am going to consider some candle making as part of my January clean-up.  I have to get rid of all of those empty candle jars.

By the way, I clean out the empty jars too.  They're fun for storage, or making more candles.

These are fun to make just for yourself, but they make great little gifts too.
How about you...?  Going to give this a try?  It's nice to give an expensive candle a second life.
Have fun!

Getting involved and giving your time to support good works.

One of the things that I am going to strive for in 2013 will be to get more involved with charitable organizations in my community.  If you're feeling sad or low, sometimes the best way to feel better is to help someone else.  I have two organizations that mean a lot to me.  They're doing great work and they are doing it locally.

National and international charities do great things, but in my opinion it can be difficult for everyday folks to get involved (outside of writing a check.)  It can also be difficult to see the immediate impact an organization might have.  That's why it's a great thing to get involved locally if you can.

Two of the issues that really touch my heart are homelessness and cancer.  I want to share a bit about my two favorite organizations.

Children Today is a non-profit organization in Long Beach, California that has dedicated itself to helping homeless families.  They provide free child care, preschool and family support services to infants and children up to six years of age who are facing homelessness.
They have created a few daycare centers specifically so that homeless children can have a safe place for the day as their parents try to get off the streets.  Parents are able to get job training, go to appointments, see case workers, etc knowing that their kids are being cared for while they do it.  Those who have jobs can earn money to support their families without worrying where their children are.

I have toured one of the daycare centers and it brought me to tears.  For some of these children it's the closest thing to a "home" experience they have had.  At meal times, every single member of  the staff sits down, family style, with the children and they all eat together.  There isn't a big turnover in either the staff or the children.  They bond, they care about each other.  It's wonderful.

As parents do well enough to move into their own homes and apartments, Children Today helps to find them donated furnishings, housewares and clothing.  An organization, impacting lives, one family at a time.  They're fabulous.

We can't always contribute financially, but we have been able to donate household items and clothing, and I have been able to donate some of my subway art pieces to their fundraisers and auctions.  Getting involved feels good....

And then there's stupid cancer!  It hurts so many people in so many ways, but one of the things people don't think about as much is how much it hurts financially.  Enter The Beckstrand Cancer Foundation.
Beckstrand's sole purpose is to help with finances for people going through cancer treatment.
If you're in chemo (or have a child who is) are you able to work?  Do you need to choose between paying for medical bills and keeping your lights on?  Do you have kids that need babysitters?  Did your income get reduced by half because you or your spouse can't work...?  Beckstrand comes in and helps pay for things like your mortgage, transportation, utilities, food... whatever people need.  They are angels.
The boys' father, about 9 months before he passed away.  Cancer is cruel and affects every aspect of one's life.
He was weak, couldn't work and was wiped out financially by his illness.  Cancer is evil.
Last year I shared the loss of Devin and Conner's dad to colon cancer, and I have previously shared about my friend Donna, who lost a 4 year battle with breast cancer.  During that 4 years she couldn't work as much, had astronomical medical bills (even with good insurance) and tried experimental treatments (that weren't covered by insurance.)  The financial hit was a big one.  My BFF, HH and I all helped with fundraisers and auctions and spaghetti dinners, trying to raise money.

I wish we had known about Beckstrand back then.  When my BFF found out about Beckstrand Cancer Foundation, she committed to the cause immediately and is now their National Spokesperson.  (I'm super proud of her and the work she's doing.) We saw first hand how cancer can decimate a family financially.

Beckstrand is raising money and then directly paying bills for people who are already under tremendous stress.  Fantastic!  Good works that have an immediate impact on the people who need help...
